Michael utilizes his diverse experience to help people with different backgrounds communicate effectively and to recognize patterns in data, behavior, teams, and cultures that lead to actionable insights and improved results. In his work, Michael connects the return of nationalist movements to increased uncertainty about the future due to the acceleration of disruptive innovations.

As a community builder and trainer with The Foundation for Community Encouragement, Michael has devoted over 35 years of his life to helping people build trust, authentic connection, and bridge their differences with integrity and respect. Michael acts as a certified leadership coach and organizational consultant to help executives, teams, and organizations to achieve their goals.

Michael earned his PhD in Neuropsychology from the City University of New York studying how the brain processes emotions. As an assistant professor at Columbia University he co-authored over 300 peer-reviewed scientific publications, and was an internationally recognized leader in acute brain injury research and for developing clinical informatics systems to support personalized medicine for critically-ill patients. Michael earned a M.Sc. in Biostatistics from Columbia University and continues to offer data science services to companies.

In 2016, Michael left Columbia University to join NationBuilder as their Chief Community Scientist to help equip leaders with the tools they need to build scalable communities both online and in-real-life. He has focused on developing strategies to humanize people despite strong disagreements, and to counter the damaging impacts of dehumanization and hate speech. He is deeply committed to helping people peacefully navigate impending changes to our cultures, creating systems in which social justice and liberty may be aligned, and to help realize the vision of building a world that works for everyone.
